Selectel releases the SelectOS 2.0 server operating system

On 30 June 2026, Selectel announced SelectOS 2.0, a server operating system based on Debian 13 packages and the Linux 6.12.86 kernel. The release targets physical servers, virtual machines and cloud environments.

What the primary source confirms

SelectOS 2.0 retains a package-management model familiar to Debian and Ubuntu teams. The vendor states that it supports modern hardware and drivers and has been designed with future FSTEC certification requirements in mind.

The wording matters: consideration of requirements is not the same as certification. A regulated deployment needs a separate check of current certificates, their scope and the exact configuration covered.

The release provides:

• vendor repositories with GPG-signed packages;
• a separate security-update channel;
• a server-focused package set without unnecessary desktop components;
• an ISO image for physical servers and virtual machines;
• a QCOW2 image for cloud infrastructure;
• container images for standardised deployment.

The operating system is listed in the Russian software registry and is available on Selectel cloud and dedicated servers.

Operational implications

A signed repository helps verify package origin, but the update chain also depends on trusted keys, a protected mirror, publication logs, restricted repository access and an emergency package-revocation process.

A dedicated security channel makes prioritisation easier but does not replace staged deployment. A practical rollout uses a test group, a limited production wave, metric checks and a rollback path.

A minimal server package set reduces attack surface only if unnecessary packages remain absent and new dependencies are controlled as applications are installed.

A migration pilot

Choose a representative but non-critical service and verify:

1. boot on the target servers and hypervisors;
2. network, storage and hardware drivers;
3. application packages and monitoring, backup and security agents;
4. corporate repositories and proxies;
5. update installation and rollback;
6. configuration automation and golden-image creation;
7. logging and time synchronisation;
8. recovery from backup.

Teams moving from Debian or Ubuntu receive a similar package environment, but the distributions should not be treated as interchangeable. Compare library versions, system defaults, update policies and vendor-support boundaries.

What has not yet been demonstrated

The release is a vendor announcement, not an independent comparison. It does not contain workload benchmarks, reliability statistics or a complete hardware-compatibility list.

Standardisation should therefore follow an internal test and a review of lifecycle, security-update and supported-configuration documentation.

Practical conclusion

SelectOS 2.0 offers a Russian server platform with a current Debian base, signed repositories and several deployment formats. It may reduce migration effort for teams already operating Debian-like systems.

The critical work starts after installation: a controlled update chain, hardware and application validation, staged rollout and a tested rollback procedure.
