Enterprise video analytics: designing storage, networks and access

How to design enterprise video analytics across cameras, edge processing, network capacity, archives, access control, resilience and monitoring.

Enterprise video analytics is a distributed information system, not a camera with an AI feature. Its quality depends on the scene, network, compute, archive, access controls and event-review process.

Before selecting cameras or models, define the task: perimeter control, flow counting, unattended-object detection, industrial-zone monitoring or archive search. Each use case has different error tolerance, retention and response requirements.

Separate capture, analysis and storage

A typical design has:

  1. camera or local recorder for capture;
  2. edge node or central compute for analysis;
  3. archive and management layer for video, events and permissions.

Edge processing reduces upstream traffic and can preserve some function during a link failure. Central processing simplifies model management and shared compute. Hybrid systems often detect a basic event locally and run complex search centrally.

Measure video before buying storage

The volume depends on camera count, observed bitrate, recording time and retention. Include variable bitrate, motion recording, multiple streams, metadata, replication, exports and growth.

A maximum-bitrate estimate gives an upper bound. A quiet demonstration scene can produce an unrealistically low one. Measure real daytime and night-time operation.

Design for normal and degraded network states

Check access-link and uplink capacity, latency, loss, failover, video-network isolation, switch power, local buffering and recovery after an outage.

For distributed sites, separate viewing traffic, event delivery and background archive upload. During degradation, events and control traffic take priority over bulk synchronisation.

Separate event data from heavy video

Store video, thumbnails, event metadata, analytics results, user audit and exported evidence as distinct classes. Search should query structured events rather than scan the complete archive every time, while every event must remain linked to its source fragment.

Define retention for each class. Keeping everything indefinitely increases cost and risk; deleting without considering investigations and obligations is equally unsafe.

Access control and audit

Restrict users by site, camera and time range. Control live view, archive search, export, configuration, user administration, analytics rules and deletion separately.

Use personal accounts, MFA for administrators, session controls and audit logs for sensitive actions. Shared operator passwords make an investigation unreliable.

Measure both false positives and misses

Track precision, recall, operator confirmation rate, event-to-alert latency, quality by site and time, degraded scenes and model drift after lighting or camera-angle changes.

Do not transfer a demonstration result directly to production. Test night mode, shadows, rain, snow, occlusion, vibration and seasonal changes.

Observe the complete pipeline

Monitor:

  • camera availability;
  • frame rate and bitrate;
  • packet loss;
  • storage capacity;
  • recording delay;
  • analytics queue depth;
  • event-processing time;
  • model errors;
  • local buffer state;
  • upload recovery after an outage.

A camera can respond while delivering a black or frozen frame. Add freshness and image-quality checks. The infrastructure observability guide covers the underlying telemetry design.

Resilience and recovery

Define what happens when the archive fails, how much footage remains locally, how chronology is repaired, where configuration is backed up and whether management can start at another site.

Large video streams do not always use the same backup method as databases. Replication of critical events, metadata and configuration plus local video retention can be more appropriate. The decision follows actual RPO/RTO and data value.
