Rostelecom's fibre network exceeds 1.1 million kilometres
Rostelecom reports more than 1.1 million km of fibre and coverage for over 80% of households in Russia's largest metropolitan areas.

On 20 July 2026, Rostelecom published consolidated figures for the development of its fibre network across Russian regions. Its fibre-optic routes now exceed 1.1 million kilometres, and more than two-thirds of the country’s families can technically connect to high-speed internet.
According to the operator, fibre coverage exceeded 80% of households in the largest metropolitan areas during the first half of the year. In most district centres, the figure is above 90%. Rostelecom also plans to move selected high-load network sections to speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s.
What the coverage figure means
Coverage represents the technical ability to connect. It is not the number of active customers and does not guarantee the speed of every connection. Distribution networks, building equipment, customer terminals and local office or home networks remain between the backbone and the final service.
An enterprise customer should clarify:
- whether an independent backup route reaches the site;
- where the nearest aggregation nodes are located;
- which throughput is contractually guaranteed;
- how availability and restoration time are measured;
- whether internet, telephony and service traffic can be separated;
- whether protected links between branches are supported.
Large network geography creates a foundation for distributed sites, but resilience depends on the topology at a specific address. Two contracts do not provide genuine redundancy if both cables share one route or enter a building through the same node.
Why selected sections need 10 Gbit/s
Traffic growth comes from more than consumer streaming. Enterprise workloads include cloud applications, backups, video meetings, surveillance systems and data exchange between branches.
Increasing aggregation capacity reduces the risk that neighbouring segments compete for one constrained link during peak periods. The result also depends on oversubscription, router performance and queue management.
Service evaluation should therefore cover latency, packet loss, jitter and availability in addition to maximum speed. These measures are particularly important for IP telephony, contact centres and transactional systems.
How a business can use the network
A fibre connection can underpin hybrid infrastructure in which branches use central services or cloud platforms. Critical sites may add an independent operator or mobile backup.
Before launch, the business should map dependencies and determine which processes must continue when the external link fails. A local queue, secondary DNS, another route and a tested switchover procedure often matter more than the headline speed of the primary circuit.

Practical conclusion
The fibre footprint reflects continued development of Russia’s core digital infrastructure. It expands connectivity options for business, but decisions at a particular site should still be based on route diversity, SLA terms, redundancy and measured network quality.
