Transactional SMS — confirmation codes, order statuses and payment notifications — require low latency and measurable reliability. Even a one-minute delay can break a login, payment or another user journey.

Let’s go through the criteria for choosing an SMS platform for business so you neither overpay nor lose messages.

How transactional SMS differ from marketing SMS

Transactional messages are sent in response to a user action and are expected: a login code, a receipt or an order status. Marketing messages require prior consent. The sender must be able to evidence that consent, record opt-outs and stop marketing messages when requested. Classification depends on the content and circumstances, not only an internal label. Transactions need speed and deliverability; marketing also needs consent records and suppression lists.

1. Speed and throughput

Throughput matters for peak loads. 4. Deliverability and fault tolerance

Direct operator connections improve deliverability and reduce delays. Ask the provider about:

  • routing and backup channels;
  • real-time delivery reports;
  • behavior on non-delivery (retry, alternative channel).

Direct operator connections are the difference between “delivered in a second” and “lost in a chain of intermediaries.”

Agree on delivery-report semantics in advance: “accepted by the platform” is not the same as “delivered to the handset”. For one-time codes, measure the 95th and 99th percentile latency, the share delivered before expiry and failure reasons by operator. The contract should define escalation, support hours and action during route degradation.

Before contracting, define the supplier’s role in the service and data-processing chain. Verify the licences required for the particular service, the legal basis for processing, processor terms, data location and the allocation of responsibility. A supplier licence does not by itself make the customer’s complete information system compliant.

Ask for a load test matching your traffic profile, a description of backup routes, delivery-report semantics, data-retention rules and the response procedure for a compromised API key. Platform throughput is not the guaranteed speed of every route; put measurable service indicators and responsibilities in the contract.

Run a pilot across several mobile operators before production. Test a controlled traffic peak, retries, timeouts, DLR handling and API-key revocation.
